Local Conditions

Outbuilding wiring on Blaine and Camas County properties

Properties around Carey, Picabo, Gannett and Fairfield often have shops, barns and outbuildings a long way from the house. Distance affects wire size, so we size feeders for voltage drop, not just breaker size.

Frozen ground limits when trenching can happen. Planning the trench in late summer or fall, or setting conduit while an excavator is already on site, saves time and cost.

Barns and shops have dust, moisture and animals. We use wiring methods and fixtures suited to those conditions, and GFCI protection where water and livestock are involved.

Shop and barn projects in Carey, Picabo and Gannett in Blaine County, Idaho, and Fairfield in Camas County need feeders sized for distance and equipment loads.

Questions

Shops and Outbuildings questions

How do I get power to a detached shop or barn?

Usually by running a feeder from your main panel through buried conduit to a subpanel in the building. If the building is far away or has large loads, a separate service from Idaho Power may make more sense. We look at distance, loads and your panel and recommend the better option.

Who does the trenching?

Either your excavator or one we coordinate with. We specify the trench depth and conduit, are on site to set conduit and pull wire, and schedule any required trench inspection before backfill. If an excavator is already working on your property, that is the best time to set conduit.

Can my shop run a welder and compressor?

Yes, with a feeder and subpanel sized for them. Tell us the equipment you have or plan to buy. We size the feeder and circuits for the actual loads, including motor starting, so tools run without dimming lights or tripping breakers.

Can you wire an ADU?

Yes. An ADU needs electrical service sized for a living space, including heat, kitchen and bath circuits, smoke and CO detectors and sometimes its own meter. We look at whether your main service can carry it and work with your builder through inspection.
